Gas carcass upgrade and compliance remedial works

ARH identified undersized gas supply pipework during a routine annual boiler service, resulting in an excessive pressure

Overview

A specialist assessment was arranged, remedial works were carried out, and the boiler was recommissioned following a full gas carcass upgrade.

The challenge

During a routine annual boiler service, ARH’s Gas Safe registered engineer identified that the existing gas supply pipework was undersized. This was causing an excessive pressure drop between the gas meter and the boiler. Although the boiler remained operational at the time, the installation did not meet the applicable gas safety requirements and needed upgrading to support safe, reliable operation going forward.

Our approach

Following the initial findings, ARH arranged a further specialist assessment to establish the most appropriate remedial solution. This resulted in a proposal to replace the existing 1-inch steel gas carcass with appropriately sized 35mm and 28mm pipework to reduce the pressure drop and restore an adequate gas supply to the boiler.

The remedial works were then carried out in full, including:

  • Safe isolation and purging of the gas installation
  • Removal of the existing undersized pipework
  • Installation of correctly sized replacement pipework
  • Gas safety and tightness testing
  • Recommissioning of the boiler on completion

The results

The gas carcass upgrade resolved the identified issue of undersized pipework, providing an appropriately sized gas supply to support safe, efficient and reliable boiler operation. All gas safety and tightness tests were passed, and the boiler was successfully recommissioned on completion of the works.

By identifying the issue during routine planned maintenance, ARH enabled the client to address a potential compliance concern before it developed into a more significant operational problem. The completed upgrade delivered a long-term solution that improved system reliability, reduced the risk of unexpected heating and hot water disruption, and helped avoid potentially costly emergency repairs.

The proactive approach also supported better maintenance planning, reduced operational risk, and provided greater confidence in the safety and performance of the installation.

This case demonstrates ARH’s commitment to proactive maintenance, technical expertise and continuous improvement, ensuring that routine servicing not only maintains existing assets but also identifies opportunities to improve compliance, reliability and long-term value for the client.
